I have it on good authority that Arnold Schwarzenegger's (seen in the picture above) wife Maria Shriver dressed up as Princess Fiona from Shrek fame this evening. Her donkey stand in, Eddie Murphy was unable to attend, was an actual miniature horse which she led around on a leash during the trick or treating festivities.

My First Manual

I just came across a box containing my first computer manual. Up until that point I had relied upon the assistance of others. Once I obtained a copy of the Basic-Plus Language Manual Order No. AA-2623C-TC for the PDP11 I was on my way!

I recently watched the movie '300'. It was a visual feast and although it didn't track exactly with my readings from youth it seemed to tell a pretty decent job of depicting the battles on that seaside so many centuries ago. To be honest I often confuse the battles of marathon with the events of '300' so my biggest concern coming away from the film was a desire to re-read my Thucydides. (I've also been having a strong urge to re-read Juvenal!)

However the movie had one huge flaw which I found very annoying. The protagonist makes at least 2 comments, not at all important from a plot perspective, about how those Athenians are pederasts. Well of course any half way decent student of this history would know that the Spartans had it going on when it came to pederasty, despite their disavows. The Attic speech had a term for sodomize, "laconize" which quite literally translated as to "Spartanize". If one were to bugger ones young acolyte one might say one is Spartanizing them! (Sounds like Martinizing!)

Anyway the issue of pederasty and the ancient Greeks is a complex issue not reduced to either my silly little examples or some modern day prejudice against gays coming out of the mouth of the Spartan King Leonidas in a movie about the Battle of Thermopylae. To be sure the Spartans may have legitimate complaints or prejudices against the Athenians (who subsequently used the time provided by the Battle of Thermopylae to finish equipping their fleet which would defeat Xerxes at the Battles of Salimis) but the chances of these complaints being some kind of sneering faggot comment strikes me as totally out of character with both those involved and the context of their day.

K and I read the first story, Over Sea, Under Stone I was completely charmed. The tone of this trailer is completely off. I haven't read The Dark Is Rising yet but if the tone of that book is anything close to that of this movie I'd have to ask for my money back from Ms. Cooper.
